Richard Boukas Solo

In Richard's solo acoustic performances, professional recordings, workshops and other special engagements, he performs a rich diversity of Brazilian music which incorporates jazz, classical and popular influences. He has performed at many venues and universities in the U.S. and Brazil. Recent NYC appearances include BB Kings Latin Guitar Fest, Subrosa World Guitar Festival and New Americans Program at New York Public Library. For the latest on upcoming appearances, see the CALENDAR.

Depending on the venue and setting, the choice of repertoire can be:

• Solo guitar interpretations of Brazilian popular repertoire (música popular brasileira, or MPB) by noted composers (see below) and pieces by guitarist pioneers Garôto, Dilermando Reis, Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfá up through contemporary innovators including Guinga, Marco Pereira, Paulo Bellinati and Sebastião Tapajós. He also performs his original compositions.

• Guitar and vocal MPB repertoire from the rich songbooks of Jobim, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Djavan, Edu Lobo, Guinga, and legendary composers from Minas GeraisMilton Nascimento, Toninho Horta and Sérgio Santos.

Richard is fluent in Portuguese, which brings a special authenticity to his performances.

Boukas original Brazilian guitar compositions are contemporary interpretations of genres including:
samba, choro, baião, valsa, maracatu, modinha and marcha.

(LECTURE and WORKSHOP)

In educator settings, concerts are usually paired with workshops and master classes that examine closely the pieces to be played later at the performance. Such concerts present an historical perspective to illustrate how solo Brazilian guitar and contemporary music as a whole has evolved over the decades. Educational presentations are held not only at universities, but at dedicated guitar seminars and festivals, music conventions and cultural centers.
