The debut CD and DVD of the Novosel-Boukas Duo, "Live at St. Michael's" captures Croatian tambura virtuoso Filip Novosel and guitarist-vocalist-composer Richard Boukas in a very intimate performance of twelve original compositions and arrangements of Balkan folk songs. The Duo's repertoire ranges from Brazilian choro and samba and odd-meter Balkan/gypsy to through-composed chamber pieces. The concert was beautifully recorded in New York City, taking full advantage of St. Michael's Auditorium's rich, resonant ambience. The performance was also videotaped for the DVD release. BOUKAS - SANTOS NETO DUO CD
BALAIO (2001) is the definitive studio recording of Boukas's Duo with Jovino Santos Neto, brilliant pianist-composer who was an integral member of Hermeto Pascoal's Group from 1977-93. Featuring four originals from each of us, Boukas plays acoustic nylon string, cavaquinho, Tacoma acoustic bass guitar and doing all vocals. Using the voice as a third instrument expands the Duo's possibilities both thematically and improvisationally. The intuitive connection between Jovino and Boukas is very strong, leading to many moments which appear planned but in reality are totally spontaneous.

AMAZONA (1993) was Boukas's Brazilian Jazz ensemble from 1990-96, featuring ambitious compositions, arrangements and a stellar rhythm section: Tony Regusis (keyboards), John Arbo (bass, bgd voc) and Ray Marchica (drums, percussion). Many of the "acoustic" instrument thematic sounds (flute, vibes, muted trumpet, etc.) are samples triggered by his guitar synthesizer. He also performs on a variety of acoustic guitars, cavaquinho, percussion, lead vocals and vocal ensemble. On Amazona there are six compositions. For four of them, there is the option of hearing the original long-play versions (tracks 7-10) or shorter versions edited for airplay (tracks 1-4).

EMBARCADERO / RICHARD BOUKAS TRIO (1983) was Boukas's second release as a leader and first in trio setting. Playing trio is a three-way conversation that can evolve in many new directions. On this date he connected with bassist Mike Formanek and drummer John Riley, who remained his working trio for several years. Another important shift here was the increasing prominence of the nylon string guitar, which facilitated repertoire incorporating Brazilian (ex. Calico), Classical (Chopiniana, Frédéric Samba) music and open "even-eighth" grooves (Embarcadero). Bittersweet and Frédéric Samba both use substantial vocal writing, a direct outgrowth of his extensive experience as a choral singer.

COMMITMENT / RICHARD BOUKAS QUARTET (1982) was Boukas's first date as a professional leader. It captures the "post-Blue Note" contemporary jazz he was playing and composing for several years, mostly in this instrumentation of horn and guitar trio. Saxophonist-flutist Ralph Lalama is the main thematic voice, along with some of my vocal doubling. John Ray (bass) and Rick Cutler (drums) take lots of creative chances interacting with the soloists. Gajatucada, track 4, is the first Brazilian piece he recorded, and remains active repertoire with his current ENSEMBLES, The title cut is an uptempo swing mixed with Afro-Cuban grooves in the B section. Osmosis is a 14-bar blues which captures Elvin Jones' unique style of drumming, while Prince of Hipness is dedicated to Wayne Shorter, probably the most important influence on his writing during this period.
