• Richard Boukas Chamber Works •
A collection of Boukas's chamber works which demonstrate his fresh contemporary voice in that idiom. Synergizing core Brazilian genres (choro, baião, samba, valsa, guarânia) with the polyphonic classical tradition, Boukas forges new territory in chamber music and collaborations with notable ensembles including PUBLIQuartet String Quartet.
This release features the following works:
String Quartet "O Campeão" (the Champion) (2012) dedicated to Brazilian music genius Hermeto Pascoal. It is a work of two very contrasting movements- a brisk Brazilian guarânia and atonal adventures reminiscent of Bartók and early Stravinsky. Commissioned and recorded by PUBLIQuartet String Quartet.
Por do Sol for Flute and String Quartet (sunset, 2010) a Brazilian toada set in lush impressionist textures, featuring rising star Chia-Ching Mao on flute.
Trio Nordestino for Marimba, Violoncello and Guitar (2011) explores the modal folkloric roots prevalent in northease Brazil. The driving main baião theme is interlaced with lyrical episodes exploring the multifaceted possibilities with these three instruments. Boukas is performing the guitar part, joined by Derek Kwan (marimba) and Jiliane Russo (violoncello).
Choro Sinfônia for String Quartet (1999) An earlier work in seven movements whose basis is Chopin's Nocturne in Eb major, Op.9 no 2. Originally written for the Modern Mandolin Quartet and later adapted for string quartet, the piece transforms Chopin's waltz theme into a lively Brazilian choro with a set of five variations.
